About SERHA
The Southeastern Reining Horse Association is a
North Carolina based affiliate of the National Reining Horse
Association. SERHA conducts two shows of its own each year held in
Williamston, NC and works in cooperation with the Carolina Classic Derby
and the Carolina Fall Classic, also held in Williamston, NC. SERHA
representatives compete in the NRHA Southeastern Affiliate Finals, to be
held in Williamston, North Carolina, in 2009. Core SERHA
membership consists of riders and horse enthusiasts of all ages and
skill levels from all walks of life. In the heart of NC reining country
we are fortunate to have Francois Gauthier, Mike McEntire and Bryant
Pace among the active members of our organization. Combined, these
riders represent nearly 100 years of experience in NRHA competition.

Daniel Smith Saddle Raffle
Daniel Smith was a young man driven to succeed
where others told him he would never have an opportunity to go.
Born with Cystic Fibrosis, Daniel beat the odds time after time to
reach success throughout his life. Most of us only knew him as
a fierce, but always congenial, competitor on horseback. His
intense focus and stern expression in the makeup pen would switch to
a warm, infectious smile at the drop of a hat - never allowing
competition to get in the way of camaraderie and fellowship.
Daniel lost his battle with the effects of Cystic Fibrosis and
passed away in the early morning hours of April 19, 2009 at the
young age of 29.
The SERHA Board of Directors, inspired by Daniel's warm personality
and graciousness to his fellow competitors, produced a Doubles
reining class and BBQ at the Spring Celebration on April 11 to raise
funds to assist with his mounting medical expenses. The event
was successful beyond our dreams, raising $2714 from the generosity
of the reining community. A trophy saddle, underwritten by the
Lane Family, Lisa Mathews, O.J. Pruitt and saddle maker Chris Wiley,
was arranged as the prize for the winning team. When the event
resulted in a tie the winning teams - consisting of Carly Galbraith,
Martina Morrell, Diane Ireland and Bryant Pace - donated the saddle
back to Daniel for his further benefit. The subsequent raffle
generated an additional $2240, raising the total contribution from
the reining community to just shy of $5000. The SERHA Board of
Directors would like to thank everyone who participated and
contributed for helping to make this a tremendous success.
